WITH JENNA + NICK
Before you dive in, there is something that I need to say that cannot be repeated enough …
DONT BE AFRAID TO BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT! This styled shoot set up by the amazing Jackie Kalchwas the perfect way to start 2021, and get the creative juices flowing, before kicking off busy season!
Styled shoots are great not just for photographers, but for clients & couples! How? Styled shoots allow you to connect with people that can make your crazy idea happen. They can also inspire some different ideas for your own session, wedding or elopement, whatever you’re doing. A lot of people think all sessions are kiiiinda the same. Well as you’ll see below, I can prove that that isn’t true- and it’s encouraged to do something a little different!
Meet these two legends: Jenna & Nick. With their two amazing pups, they adventure the Canadian Rockies every second they can, and are lucky to call the mountains home. This lets them live that dream adventure lifestyle sine its so conveniently in their backyard. And their personalities fit perfect with the mountain retro vibe we were going’ for!
A lot of people also think that you can’t capture real emotions and moments during a ‘styled shoot’. Well, I’m here to tell you AGAIN, that that isn’t true. Please see above photo for reference of a genuinely good time being had (:
Kananaskis was the perfect setting, and gave us a pretty perfect day to work with. Its an area in the Alberta section of the Rockies that tends to be over looked by tourists, considering Canmore & Banff are right next to it. This also makes it a really great setting for sessions, as it’s not nearly as busy as most popular spots in Banff, but still so beautiful.
if you’re visiting any of the parks within Kananskis here’s something you need to know: starting in 2021, it is now required to buy a day pass, or a annual conservation pass to visit the area. You can read more about how to get one here!
Also a tip if you’re visiting anywhere, but especially state, provincial, and national parks: remember to follow Leave No Trace Principles!
k why can’t I be this cool???????
This was one the first sessions I have ever done where I actually gave myself creative freedom. I was stuck believing that only certain shots were needed/people liked, not expanding my horizons, you get it. So after digging around my house, I found probably the most random, useless thing that would turn out to be a vital need for this session…
I found a plastic lid, for a container of tacks. Yup. You read that right. it was kinda stretched up, had smudges and stuff all over it, but it fit perfectly over the camera lens i had. And considering this session had a very ‘throwback vibe’ to it, I thought it’d be a cool idea to have some film-inspired shots mixed in.
Well, the film inspired shots came from that absolutely random, seemingly useless plastic lid. The smudges and scratches hitting the sunlight was perfect little way to get a bit of variety and some creative shots!
Now this is where things started to get real trippy. This styled shoot was intended for us to get creative, and trying out a prism for the first time while shooting was an absolutely stellar way to have shots that fit with the time period we were goin’ for!
Photogs, if you’re interest in prisms, amazon has a big selection!
Cannot thank Jackie enough for setting up this amazing day, and to Jenna & Nick for being so cool about just ‘goin’ with the flow’ as we all got to create! If you’re interested in planning your own unique session, hit me up here!Cause I’m telling’ ya I wanna hear all about it!
And If you wanna see some different winter sessions, you can check one out in Canmore here, and another in a different part of the Kananskis region here!
